Resumen:   This research has investigated phraseological units with zoonyms (UFz). The phraseological units with zoonyms (UFz) are idioms that take animal names in its composition, as Brazilian Portuguese idioms ser cachorro sem dono, ser uma galinha morta, dizer cobras e lagartos, etc. The motivation for such research was due to the understanding that phraseology can be said to have an emblematic and recurrent cultural aspect in the languages, and for this reason is every day in “everyone's lips” which justifies its inclusion in the dictionary. This research has taken as foundation theoretical principles of bilingual and pedagogic Metalexicography and on the interface which it establishes with Phraseology. Its general goals are: (i) identify and describe the given treatment to phraseological units with zoonyms in monolingual dictionaries; (ii) identify and describe the given treatment to phraseological units with zoonyms (equivalences) in school bilingual dictionaries, checking whether the provided equivalences are the same in the 7 dictionaries or differ from each other; (iii) to find whether there are absences of translations of UFz in school bilingual dictionaries. (iv) to investigate whether the phraseological units with zoonyms are present in the collections of foreign language textbooks - English, which participate of the National Textbook Program (Programa Nacional do Livro Didaìtico - PNLD) in vocabulary study sessions. The chosen monolingual dictionaries of the Portuguese language were Houaiss and UNESP. The bilingual dictionaries were school dictionaries easily accessible in bookstores, either for economic reasons, or for their popularity. They are School Oxford (2012), School Longman (2009), School Michaelis (2010), Collins Practical (2012), Mini-Webster's (2011), Landmark (2006), and Advanced Larousse (updated 2009), Outcome: The survey found out that the UFz are not present in bilingual dictionaries. They also have a small presence in the surveyed vocabulary sessions of the textbooks. Another aspect also focused was to discover whether the UFz (present in the school bilingual dictionaries surveyed) received the same translation equivalences. It was possible to conclude that the UFz receive an average of three different equivalences in the seven surveyed bilingual dictionaries. [Source: Author]
