Resumen:   The acknowledgement of translation as an act of communication with emphasis on the importance of specific situational contexts call for findings from sociolinguistics, both with regard to studies of language varieties (sociolects) and, even more important, with regard to the realization of communicative acts in relation to context and situation (sociopragmatics). A promising area for future research is the field of cross-cultural pragmatics with cross-cultural studies in which speech act realizations are analysed in relation to socio-cultural constraints (e.g. Snell-Hornby, 1984). However, cultural differences may originate from any linguistic concept. By means of the category of gender, especially the concept of social gender, this volume, illustrates the different parameters which are involved when referring to translation as an act of cross-cultural transfer.
