Resumen:   Subtitling translation is a subtype of translation procedures characterized by certain restrictions arising from the specific requirements of the medium. It has to follow extralinguistic circumstances - the course and speed of the film story, spatial restrictions imposed by the size of the screen, the viewers' reading speed. Consequently, the translator needs to apply specific adaptive procedures, the so-called reductions. These reductions are generally believed to be produced by the translator's random, intuitive decisions that are not underlain by any systematic factors. The dissertation aims to refute this viewpoint and to prove it is possible to build a descriptive model based on the contemporary linguistic knowledge which will yield at least a Partial explanation of the principles of subtitling translation. The model of description builds on the current knowledge about the cognitive foundations of our perception and understanding and on the related theory of human communication as a means of conveying a message from the sender to. the receiver. This theory has given rise to the so-called communicative models of translation, which treat translation as a double communication act with the translator playing the role of the receiver in the first Part of the act and that of the sender in the second part. These two general theories are brought together with contemporary linguistic models also based on the treatment of language as a means of communication and approaching in this light either the structure of language as a system or its use in various language activities. An attempt is made to unify relevant findings from various areas of linguistic explorations into a single model to be used in the analysis of subtitling translation. [Source: Author]
