Resumen:   It is the principal aim of this study to compile a list of the French translations of eighteenth century English novels. Even a cursory examination indicates the need of a more extensive bibliography in this field. [...] The present investigation, which covers the period from 1700 to 1805, has revealed a total of 630 novels, including not only actual translations, but imitations, "histoires angloises," "anecdotes," etc. It should be noted, moreover, that the list of supposed translations represents only a fractional part of what must be an astonishing total, and is offered merely to give proof of the wide diffusion of the "genre anglais." In the light of this new survey an attempt has been made to visualize more clearly the relationship of the English novel to French literature during the eighteenth century. It has seemed desirable, for example, to fixmore accurately the date when the French public became aware of the English novel, and to ascertain the rapidity with which the English novel penetrated France. Likewise, it has been considered advisable to outline the principal channels through which the English novel became known to French readers. The translations of the great English novelists of the period have been examined, to obtain some idea of the nature and extent of their diffusion on the Continent. In similar fashion, the English novels translated into French have been classified according to type, in order to determine which varieties of fiction were most popular in France during the eighteenth century.
