Resumen:   This study attempts to suggest the nature and extent of the Spanish fiction - especially the non-chivalric fiction - that was imported for Renaissance English readers. It begins with a rapid glance at the knowledge of Spanish in England, and then considers briefly the aims and problems of translators, but its chief subject is the works themselves. More or less chronologically it presents the various genres leading up to Don Quixote, and after that historic point, where narratives begin to grow more numerous, it groups them as Byzantine romances, novelas, and satiric-realistic fiction. After a few preliminary observations, in other words, it surveys both the translations and the originals of the non-chivalric Spanish fiction that was produced during the Anglo-Spanish Renaissance.
