Resumen:   What is the difference between a set of unrelated sentences and a coherent text, and how can we avoid destroying a text by translating it into unrelated sentences? This is the problem faced by desginers of machine translation systems, especially if these systems are designed to deal with a broad spectrum of input and to produce a high quality output. Grammatical research has traditionally focused much more on clauses and sentences than on entire texts. Though a steadily increasing interest in text linguistics, otherwise known as discourse analysis or text grammar, can be observed, computational coverage of this area is still incomplete and highly explorative. In this book, the authors treat the phenomenon of text coherence with an open mind, yet with an eye on practical application. They are backed by sound knowledge of both syntax and semantics, and by an environment of intensive laboratory work and international contacts. The result is a study that highlights translation of textual entities, suggests technical solutions to fellow-researchers, and brings implementation of intricate mechanisms a step closer to system developers. At the same time, it provides a substantial and illustrative introduction to computational text analysis for students of linguistics, translation, artificial intelligence, and all those interested in natural language processing.
