Resumen:   The twin obscurities of history and languages are played out in the major and minor texts of a cultural tradition. As historians of translation, our aim is to cast light on the relevant scenes of the Hispanic world. Just how complex that world is can be gauged from its early 9th century Arabic translations; its extraordinary 10th century Hebrew philological works; its wonderful Castilian and Catalan versions from the late Middle Ages; its rare and original transfers into the Amerindian languages; its controversial documents which, despite Draconian censorship, revealed the revolutionary ideas of an incipient modernity; precise and poetic translations of their day.
This map also has its obscure areas: texts which have been lost, censored, destroyed, put on trial by the Inquisition, confiscated, burned, transformed into infill linings for the binding of books, hidden, never printed, stolen or forgotten. The aim of 1611 is to assist in the task of retrieving and disseminating as much as possible of that extraordinary cultural memory. [Source: Editors]
