Resumen:   This dissertation examines the influence of language philosophical world views on practical decisions made in multilingual specialised communication - translation, term discussions, compilation and use of specialised dictionaries. For this purpose, the philosophical views are divided in two classes: linguacentric (language is primary; expressions have intrinsic meaning) and instrumental (language is a tool for communicators to achieve their goals; expressions acquire meaning only in the presence of a competent interpreter). While acknowledging the impossibility of proving the correctness of either of these, the dissertation argues that instrumentalism is more useful in practice. Data for that comes from an analysis of published specialised dictionaries, a dictionary project case study, comparison of test translations to translator attitudes, a survey of decision makers at translation service providers, and a case study of translation customer requirements. Additional results of the dissertation include an instrumentalist model of translation, an evaluation system for school translations, classifications of internal inconsistencies in dictionaries and their prevention measures, and a concept-based termbase system with a mechanism for conversion into a word-based dictionary.
