Resumen:   The present thesis is an analysis of reduction, the core translation technique in subtitling, from a dual perspective. On one hand, it is a systematic analysis of the percentages of reduction in subtitling in different film genres; it is an attempt to establish the extent to which filmic characteristics may determine the degree of reduction in a film. This is achieved by using subtitle files of English films subtitled into Greek, the mother tongue of the present author. On the other hand, it takes on a pan-European perspective by comparing European subtitling styles as regards reduction percentage, in order to establish whether different national characteristics may effect reduction levels in subtitling.
