Resumen:   This study is an ethnography of language and communication in the Belgian asylum procedure in which sense-making processes are analysed from the perspective of performance and mobility across social spaces. The primary data for this study comprises a corpus of 39 administrative files collected at the different asylum agencies -- and for each file I witnessed and recorded at least one of the interviews between a public official and the asylum seeker concerned. The data is predominantly African and English: it contains asylum cases of African asylum seekers from Sudan, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia and Nigeria and in each of the files, English is used as a medium of interaction: (a) it is used for the direct interaction between the applicant and the official; or (b) in case of interpretation, it is used as a source or a target language. As the main input in the legislative procedure is language-based, each case can be approached as a textuality complex in which the narrative of displacement occupies a central place. I focus on oral performance (application interviews) and professional entextualisation processes (textual files). With my research I intend to contribute to a better understanding of language production and interpretation in the Belgian asylum procedure and the impact this may have on the determination of refugee status.
