Resumen:   Our research focuses on the activity of oral translation, which is a practice found in plurilingual settings to handle linguistic diversity. Translation can be done either by professional translators or by bilingual speakers who perform it spontaneously. It is a resource that can be alternative or complementary to other solutions such as the use of a lingua franca. In our study, we adopt a praxeological and sequential perspective on translation: we take into account the way translation modifies the activity in which it is embedded and how it requires participants to adopt specific forms of coordination. In particular, we focus on the sequential organisation of this activity, analysing the mechanisms by which the transition from the turn to be translated to the “translating turn” takes place. Exploring the methods and the resources by which the translator takes the floor and starts the translation, we show that transitions are a matter of negotiation and that negotiation primarily concerns the practical units of translation. Using the theoretical and methodological framework of Conversation Analysis, our work is based on audio and video recordings of natural interactions. Such audible and visible resources structure the organisation of “talk-in-translation“ and, understood from a multimodal perspective, allow us to contribute to an embodied conception of translation.
