Resumen:   Comparative analysis of remote sensing terminology. The translation of syntagmatic noun compounds from English to Spanish This research presents an approach to the terminology of remote sensing from space in English and Spanish. It focuses on today’s most important word formation mechanism in specialised languages, syntagmatic compounding. This study observes and describes how syntagmatic noun compounds in this field are formed in English, and how the resulting units are transferred and translated into Spanish. This thesis focuses on identifying formation patterns among these units and their language equivalents. To do so, the compounds originating in the language of primary term formation, English, are analysed first, with special attention paid to their morphosyntactic and semantic structure. Afterwards, we tackle the problems of understanding and decoding associated with English units, we compare the morphosyntactic and semantic structure of the compounds in the source language and the target language and also pay attention to their denominative variation and level of lexicalisation. Finally, we observe how the influence of English manifests itself in the Spanish equivalents through the identification of the transferring procedures used to import them. The results show a strong preference for loan translations in this process and a tendency to more denominative variation and a lower level of lexicalisation in Spanish equivalents. The method used in this study takes advantage of the close-knit relationship developed between corpus linguistics and the new communicative approaches to terminology and translation. It also serves as a methodological model for secondary term formation in nondominant languages in current scientific and technological communication between experts. The starting point of this study is therefore to describe this type of compounds and how they are translated in an English-Spanish comparable corpora containing research papers on remote sensing within a specific environmental field, remote sensing of forest fires. The results obtained are included in a bilingual terminological database aimed at improving communication in this field by helping experts and translators involved in the production of remote sensing texts in English and Spanish.
