Resumen:   Deverbalization is defined at both the syntactic level and at the discourse level. The syntactic level refers to absence of source language syntactic interference on target language production, and discourse level refers to integration of contextual knowledge into the discourse representation. Deverbalization at the syntactic level was tapped into with complex sentences with adverbials, the clause order of which differs in Chinese and English, and deverbalization at the discourse level was tapped into with discourse-inappropriate words that cause coherence breaks. Increased input rate and source text difficulty had negative effects on deverbalization which suggested that the 2 variants constituted the determinant factors on deverbalization. Correlation between working memory and 1 index of deverbalization at the syntactic level was significant, but correlations between working memory and the other 2 indices were not. Deverbalization at the syntactic level, when compared with monolingual free recall tasks, consumed similar time in reading comprehension but more when preparing for production. [Source: Author]
