Resumen:   The PhD Dissertation Metalinguistic competence in teaching translation at university level (English and Serbian) deals with the metalinguistic competence in teaching translation as a special type of a student explicit knowledge about language. Chapter 1 outlines the scope and aims of the research. The aim is to examine whether the explicit instructions and active interactive feedback effect the metalinguistic development in teaching translation at university level. We use the descriptive and experimental method in our research. Chapter 2 defines the linguistic and metalinguistic competence. Chapter 3 introduces the translation and describes the translation competence. Chapter 4 establishes the principles underlying teaching translation. Chapter 5 establishes the principles and assumptions underlying the various approaches to teaching grammar. Chapter 6 describes the relationship of explicit and implicit teaching of grammar. Chapter 7 describes the process of learning and vocabulary acquisition in foreign language teaching. Chapter 8 of the empirical part of this doctoral thesis describes the population and sample surveys. Chapter 9 deals with the lexical-semantic processing and statistical analysis of translation errors in the experimental and control group on the material in English and Serbian. The results show that the use of dictionaries has a positive impact on process of the word acquisition by the students of the experimental group and reduction of errors in the selection of the correct translation equivalent. Chapters 10 and 11 deal with the syntactic and morphological processing and analysis of translation errors in the both groups on the material in English and Serbian. The results of this research show that the students of experimental group translate more accurately if their errors are immediately corrected by cognitive comparison based on form. The explicit teaching of grammar has led to the improvement of their language skills. Chapter 12 offers the conclusion. [Source: Author]
