Resumen:   Our research highlights deviation of French translations, from 1910 to 2004, of eight short stories written by the Brazilian authors Machado de Assis and GuimaraÞes Rosa. From the corpus of eight short stories (four of each author), we compared the work of twelve translators based on the Berman methodology.
We have first defined the problems found in the translation and in the re- translation and exposed the main French theories from the 16th Century until nowadays. Then, we study the literary relationship between France and Brazil, the reception of the Brazilian works in France and the "horizon of translations."
In a second instance, we present the « systematisms » of Machado's writing (the detachment from realism and the presence of a narrator in the narration) and the "untranslatables" of GuimaraÞes Rosa (the particular and the universal property such as the recreated idiom), showing how translators worked over these "peculiarities".
Having presented the first translators, who usually tend towards "ethnocentrism" and are always ready to "naturalize" the work, and thereafter the retranslators, who tend to "foreignize" and "literalize," we investigate Rì based on the texts - their "translation projects," their "ethic", their "translation position", and their "imaginary library". At last, we compared how both authors translated the aphorisms, the expressions of the popular, and the madness. This thesis shows the variety of tones and meanings given to an original text, while each translator reveals the work's different possible meanings, leading it to be retranslated.[Source: Author]
