Resumen:   Two major movements of Arabic translation have taken place in the islamic world. The first, animated by hunayn b. Ishaq in the 9th century, dealt with the ancient greek science. The second was initiated in the 19th century by muhammad ali, pasha of egypt. One of the great figures of the second movement was rifa a-t-tahtawi. He was born in 1801 and he received his elementary education in the koranic school then joined the famous al azhar. He was chosen in 1826 as a preacher of the first group of egyptian studants sent to france. In addition to his major job he displayed a great apptitude for studying french language. He started translating some french textes wich he thought interesting. He took the opportunity of translating non-technical textes parallel to the translation policy launched by muhammad ali eg "la charte constitutionnelle de 1814"; " moeurs et coutumes des nations" ; "les aventures de telemaque". In addition to this individual translation activities, he was nominated as an organiser of the translation bureau where he supervised the translation of commercial and civil french laws. Being gratuated from al azhar and writing for a relatively wide audience seem to have highly influenced his strategy in tackling translation problems. He managed, for instance, to omit, delete or change all exciting expressions that might have chock the reader. He attempted to adapt arabic language to the notions of french culture by employing several linguistic processes. [Source: Author]
