Resumen:   Self-translation, where the translator is also the author, is a practice that questions just as much the reflection on translation as that of the notion of work and of its evolution as sole and intangible object. The aim here is to attempt to define the status that this practice between French and, for the first time, Western Armenian, language of Diaspora in peril, holds in literature. In view of differing theories, the analysis is evidenced by the individual pratice of polygraph Archag Tchobanian, poetess Manig Berberian, playwright Ghévont Méloyian and poets Arsène Yergath and Puzant Topalian, in France and in Egypt, within the period 1895-1969. It is illustrated by a series of examples based on a varied corpus (poems, tales, literary studies, letters, speeches, drama) and by taking into account the literary context, critics, paratexts and correspondence. The volume and frequency of the productions vary, as do the goals : to act like a touchstone, contribute to emphasize the break-up with classical language, adapt to another public, acquaint with a third culture, meet a demand. Variation of titles in different publications and the way texts and collections are introduced to the readers point to the conclusion that self-translations are neither redundant nor substitutes for the initial texts but they are very much a permanent fixture of the work, regardless of the language. The comparison, otherwise seldom possible, between self-translations and translations by other hands provides evidence to conclude that the appearance of one does not prevent that of the other and does not lessen nor discard the authority of the other.
