Resumen:   Wolfram Wilss is considered to be one of the most representative theorists of the scientific tendency in the "science of translation" (Übersetzungswissenschaft) in Germany. Based on three of his principie books - The science of translatíon (1977/1982), Kognition und Obersetzen (Cognition and Translation) (1988) and Know/edge and Skills in Translator Behaviour (1996) - this dissertation examines the theoretical of foundation of the concept of "science" exposed by this author. Starting with the theorization of Wilss, l argue that there is a conflict between some of the tacit presuppositions of this concept (when used according to the "philosophical" Cartesian paradigm like in the case of Wilss) and the characteristics of any translation. I develop my argument on the basis of two concepts that are indispensable for any theorization about translation and that constitute an important link in this analysis: "meaning" and "subject". Besides, I discuss the relation that Wilss establishes between his own "scientific" work and the sitemological mode of f the natural sciences. According to Wilss, the latter model is based exclusively on the Cartesian philosophy. My claim is that the application of the concept of science obeying the principies of this paradigm is problematic when related to translation practice, and also in comparison to the usage of this concept in some works of contemporary natural scientists and of theorists of science who have led an extensive controversy about this scientific mode!. Thus, largue that not only the problems and contradictions that exist in the theorization of Wilss but also the concept of language and subject adopted by an important part of the cootemporary scientific community make evident the impossibility to develop a “science of translation” as proposed by quoted theorist.
