Resumen:   This paper examines the history of the Costa Rican Association for Professional Translators and Interpreters (ACOTIP) since its founding in 2003. It was established with the objective of playing an important role in the professionalization of Costa Rican translators and interpreters, the development of a national translation market and the promotion of ethical standards in the field as well as communication among the association members and translators and interpreters at large. The emergence of translators associations worldwide from the beginning of the 20th Century will be discussed followed by the specific context in which ACOTIP arose, how it was founded, and the process of creating the bylaws. In addition, the different processes initiated by the four Boards of Directors elected up to now will be analyzed, as well as some of the projects planned for the future. This paper is intended to encourage the strengthening of translators and interpreters associations, in order to coordinate joint actions for the benefit of all professionals in the field, raise awareness on the activities that we share, and protect our profession for the sake of a fair translation market and the social recognition of our work.
