Resumen:   Special attention is set aside for inter-cultural and cross-cultural problems, discussing some different definitions of culture put forth in studies of intercultural communication in the workplace. More specifically, the concept of business negotiation is examined with special regard for problems of linguistic expression and reception, many of which are strictly related to the cultural dimension. Two or three specific areas (e.g. the use of cultural key-words and turn-taking) are discussed in detail, also making reliance on some “cases” presented in the literature. Within this framework, the role of the interpreter in this business environment is discussed, looking at some of most problematic issues. The examination of an authentic case study provides the opportunity to discuss the role of the language mediator in business negotiations, dealing with some of the most important aspects of the profession and its code of conduct.
