Resumen:   The paper discusses the linguistic realisation of ideology in news texts and the potential effects of translational solutions on ideology. […] The research material consists of an English news text reporting the cyanide accident in Romania in 2000, and its Finnish translations made by translation students; in addition, a number of news reports published in English and Finnish newspapers and periodicals are examined to reveal potential general patterns in the ways in which the event was reported and linguistically realised. The analysis compares the use of vocabulary, passive structures, nominalisations and premodified noun phrases in the source text and the student translations and finally focuses on one particular translation in which a few lexical and syntactic changes made to the source text result in ideological changes, turning a fairly neutral expository news text into a stronger, more explicit argumentative text.
