Resumen:   The study reported in this article addresses abstracts from an interdisciplinary perspective, comparing 300 RA abstracts from a number of academic journals representing the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. My approach consists of three stages. In the first, I briefly discuss the rhetorical structure of abstracts belonging to a variety of disciplinary domains. Secondly, I examine evaluation as it is manifested in the present RA abstracts. Thirdly, I address the abstracts in order to discover whether the abstract supplies the voice to its writer (averral), whether it hides behind the passive voice, or whether it makes use of the voices of previous authors (attribution). The pedagogical implications for the teaching of abstract writing are also considered. [Source: Author]
