Resumen:   This article presents a translation experiment designed to test the psychological reality of the conceptual metaphor theory introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and further elaborated by Grady (1997). The more specific hypotheses tested in the experiment are based on the idea that there are two different kinds of conceptual metaphors: 1) primary metaphors which develop as a result of basic and universal human bodily experiences, and 2) complex metaphors which are more culture-specific combinations of primary metaphors. […] The experiment reported in this paper utilizes a software program called Translog, which enables a more efficient analysis of translation data, both in terms of translation processes and products. The tentative results show that translation indeed seems to be a valid method for cognitive metaphor studies, producing information that could remain hidden in studies operating on one language alone.
