Resumen:   After coping with the history of the evolution of irony, and after the exploration of both rhetoric, literary approaches and different pragmatic perspectives, the present study takes relevance theory as its theoretical framework. The forerunners of the theory, Sperber and Wilson, gave as instances some of the forms of irony most typical of the corpus under study, La Celestina, one of the most important literary Spanish works written in the Late Middle Ages by Fernando de Rojas (1499). For this reason, the present work focuses upon the analysis of Rojas' work as well as the three earliest extant English versions –Rastell (ca.1525), Mabbe (1631) and Captain Stevens (1707).
All in all, therefore, the purpose of the present work is to attempt to offer an analysis of the forms of irony which may be regarded as non-ostensive or non-echoic, taking into consideration that they seem to be associated to some of the types of irony most characteristic of literary works, as Rojas' work suggests. In this sense, our central hypotheses may be summarised as follows. The distinction between echoic and non-echoic irony should be best approached in terms of degree, as a continuum. If irony is seen as an aspect of communication, this means that, as relevance theory shows, it is not based only upon a process of codification and decodification of information, but also and most importantly, upon inference. It is the latter that will enable the addressee to grasp the speaker's communicative intention. [Source: Author]
